MECO-1 coming up shortly. My hatred for Tampa increases infinitely when I can’t see a launch on a perfectly clear day. I think I’ll move back home to Merritt Island, where I belong.

It was a gorgeous launch from Merritt Island….such a clear, beautiful day.

Top: Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with Mir on 4 July 1995. Cosmonauts Anatoliy Y. Solovyev and Nikolai M. Budarin, who had arrive onboard Atlantis five days earlier, took Soyuz TM-21 for a fly-around photo survey prior to Atlantis undocking for her return to Earth. This was the first time a shuttle had docked with Mir.

NASA invites you to send a haiku to Mars.

NASA is inviting members of the public to submit their names and a personal message online for a DVD to be carried aboard a spacecraft that will study the Martian upper atmosphere.

The DVD will be in NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, which is scheduled for launch in November. The DVD is part of the mission’s Going to Mars Campaign coordinated at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics.

The DVD will carry every name submitted. The public also is encouraged to submit a message in the form of a three-line poem, or haiku. However, only three haikus will be selected. The deadline for all submissions is July 1. An online public vote to determine the top three messages to be placed on the DVD will begin July 15.

SR-71 Facts and Figures

Flying at 80,000 ft (24,000 m) meant that crews could not use standard masks, which could not provide enough oxygen above 43,000 ft (13,000 m). Specialized protective pressurized suits were produced by the David Clark Company for the A-12, YF-12, M-21 and SR-71; similar suits were also used on the Space Shuttle. Furthermore, an emergency ejection at Mach 3.2 would subject crews to an instant heat rise of about 450 °F (230 °C); thus, during a high altitude ejection scenario, an onboard oxygen supply would keep the suit pressurized during the descent.

The cockpit could be pressurized to an altitude of 10,000 ft (3,000 m) or 26,000 ft (7,900 m) during flight. The cabin needed a heavy-duty cooling system, for cruising at Mach 3.2 would heat the aircraft’s external surface well beyond 500 °F (260 °C) and the inside of the windshield to 250 °F (120 °C). An air conditioner used a heat exchanger to dump heat from the cockpit into the fuel prior to combustion.

The faux-SRB’s for the Atlantis exhibit are coming along nicely now. They should be done by the middle of May, on target for a grand opening July 4th. There will eventually be an ET in the middle which visitors will walk underneath to view the Orbiter.
